One of the most curious—and most dangerous—elements of a forest fire is what happens when the fire burns underground, through the root systems of trees and underbrush, and then suddenly explodes to the surface when it finds an opening to feed on oxygen. That’s pretty much what’s going on with the ceaseless corruption down at Camp Runamuck. For example, with all that’s going on in the streets and in the national bloodstreams, you might’ve missed this from Secretary of the Treasury Steve Mnuchin, by Politico in its Morning Money pigeonhole.
In a stunning move, the Trump administration is signaling that it won’t disclose the recipients of more than $500 billion in bailout money delivered to 4.5 million businesses through the PPP. Mnuchin says it’s “proprietary” and “confidential” information. The GAO told POLITICO that the Small Business Administration is also withholding PPP loan data the agency requested as part of its oversight efforts.
“Proprietary information”? Does Mnuchin think that the 500-bil is some sort of widget that the Treasury Department invented? In one sense, of course, the money is “proprietary information” and we’re the damn proprietors. It’s our damn money. And it went to 4.5 million businesses, and we’re not entitled to know who they are? We have to take on faith that this bunch of brigands aren’t doling it out to lunch buddies and golfing buddies? Yeah, think again. Of course, once you’ve told Congress under oath that $100 million in assets, anything. From Bloomberg:
The apparent reversal on disclosure comes amid troubling signs for oversight of the $2.2 trillion pandemic relief package that Congress approved in March. The Government Accountability Office, which is responsible for preparing a required report on the spending by the end of June, has requested loan data from both the PPP and a separate program for economic “disaster” loans, but has not yet been told when the request will be honored, according to spokesman Chuck Young.
It’s going to take decades to fumigate democracy.
